Finally getting to replacing door grab handle (top part clip) to stop my handle popping out every time it's used… & thought I'd replace one of the glass rubbers I bought months ago. But I cannot get the glass out to allow me to replace the seal. What bolts should I be releasing to enable to glass to be freeeeeee?

Whilst I still don't know how to remove glass, I released the bolts furthest from the centre runners which allowed me to slide the glass to the left so I could replace the window runner seal… Happy days !

Roll or move the window half way up or down so that you can see the bolt through the longer of the holes in the rail.
Remove the inner and outer scraper, remove the 2 bolts and the window will pull up and out.
What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.
Where are my DIY Links?

To remove the glass there are 2 10mm bolts in the middle of each plastic holder.
Roll or move the window half way up or down so that you can see the bolt through the longer of the holes in the rail.
Remove the inner and outer scraper, remove the 2 bolts and the window will pull up and out.
Thank you kindly 🙂 !

I imagine that the fit was always snug by design but due to the passage of 30 yrs it might be that the rubber has deteriorated into effectively a very good glue.
I might be able to free them by giving each a really big yank but I'm anxious that this might damage something e.g. I might bend some metal structural part that resists me doing this.
has anyone else come across this problem?…how might I overcome it?
a friend of mine who worked at rover said that their cars had a similar fitting and they used to have a pliers-like tool that you used to pull open each channel but I cant find such a tool on the net - has anyone heard of such a tool and where I might get one/use one?
thanks

Removing front door glass?
The two screws through the bracket on the side.
1 x 10mm bolt through a peice of plastic on the opposite side
And then the runner inbetween them both, I stripped a mech down today so I happen to have a photo of it out!
Hope that helps

Thanks very much for your replay and photo.
I know about the 2 bolts on the left hand side in your picture - I've circled those in red.
I did not know about a 10mm bolt on the opposite i.e. right hand side but in your picture I have circled where this might be in red…is that correct?
as regards the runners (indicated by the yellow arrows) , these grip the glass very, very firmly in my car so my questions is how do I release these so that I can take the window out?

The one in the middle on the on the runner, yellow arrow, that should slide off one end - left in this photo I believe
If you drop the bolts attached by the green lines it will give you more wiggle room as the entire mechanism will be able to move left / right

Please can you clarify:
What tasks do I need to complete to remove just the window glass? - so far these may be..…
1. For each door, remove the two bolts in the red circle - done!
2. For each door, detach the the 2 lift channels (https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/golf-mk1/171837571A/window-lift-channel-front-or-rear-mk1-golf-jetta-caddy-le/?crumbStartPage=2&crumbStartRow=14) from the window glass.
These channels are pointed to by the yellow arrows in my photo and are lined with rubber seals/inserts (https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/golf-mk1/831837565/seal-window-lifter-channel-various-vws/?crumbStartPage=2&crumbStartRow=14) which very firmly grip the window glass.
I think that in order to remove the glass from the door I need to sufficiently loosen their grip on the glass so that I can lift the glass up and out through the long and narrow aperture at the top of the door where the window scrapers are.
How can I loosen their grip?..or is it the case that can I remove the window glass without needing to do this?
3. In your reply you've mentioned there is a '1 x 10mm bolt through a piece of plastic on the opposite side' - I suggested it was where the hole was circled in blue in blue but it's not clear from your reply whether I was correct so please can you advise?
thanks
Ben
