I'm new to 80s VWs and I noticed that I probably don't have the necessary tools to remove a wheel on the side of the road!
I have a jack and a tire iron with a 17mm socket to remove the 4 bolts. But what about that huge nut in the center!? What size is that nut, and what's the best tool to carry in case I get a flat? An enormous socket wrench?
Thanks as always.

That huge nut isn't going to be an issue.
That is the Axle nut and you only remove it to either
1. Replace the strut.
2. Replace the wheel bearing.
3. Replace the axle.
The 4 lug bolts are all you have to worry about.
I suggest that you either get a Bentley, or a haynes manual so you ca read all about it.

HA! I feel silly! I didn't think to just take off the bolts and give it a yank. Thanks!!
