Remove the arm.
Remove all the plastic gubbins from the spindle (if there is any)
Undo the nut on the arm spindle
Remove the cardboard inner liner on the inside of the tailgate (it's got 6 little black clips. If you can use a forked trim removal tool to get them out. Try not to break anything as the cardboard is irreplaceable and the little plugs are stupid money)
There's some 10mm bolts that hold the assembly in place inside the boot lid.
Remove the wiring plug to the wiper motor
Undo all the bolts
Should slip out through the holes in the inside of the tailgate.

If you also want to remove the srayer thingy
Disconnect the electrics from the washer tank on the drivers side rear
In the tailgate pull or cut the tubing to the srayer jet
Firmly (it's stuck in there very tight!) push from the inside (expect to swear lots when it finally emerges as you will undoubtedly smash or cut your hands on the sharp edges of the lips on the cut outs of the inside of the tailgate !)

None of it's too hard, just get plenty of light so you can see where it all sits and how it's attached.

I managed it with the tailgate insitu with no cheating by looking at the Haynes, so it must be relatively simple

Some of my golf's  previous owner have done pretty good job with mine. My tailgate is totally shaved, where used to be wiper arm and tailgate lock is blanked with metal and resprayd. And there is some work that has been done to wiper motor. In fusebox there is modified reley with button on top of it, and it operates wiper motor witch opens the trunk. Pretty cool imo :)
