I have a thermo switch that was fitted to the car. No part number but correct temp range - 85/95degLooks as though a plug should fit into it with the two terminals ???? and ideas ??????

As far as I remember fan switches are just a 'pass through' for a live feed that only engages when the temp hits the trigger level.
Therefore there should be a live feed in and then a connector to the fan. The fan is then triggered when the temp is hit.
Possibly.
I'm sure Briano will correct my errors as usual.

The fan switches I have had (and just bought) just have 2 spade terminals on them, no plastic cowling bit. Probably off a later model.
Ian, you are correct, it's just a pass through for the positive to the fan.

Its a SWITCH normally open when cold.
When it is up to temp, it closes and allows power to the fan. .
The later Cabriolets and over here the 82 Rabbits had a relay in the mix, as the Cabriolets usually had the after run fan sensor as well. The early 81 Rabbit I had was a more simple, and I made it more simple Direct wire from the battery through a water proof 40 amp in-line fuse holder with a 25-30 amp fuse to the left spad on the Radiator, the right side was direct to the Fan…
The fan is isolated from Ground because of the plastic tanks and Rubber mounts, so best to verify that the Brown wire on the fan connector is at Frame ground.
You don't need a plug as good insulated AMP or Spad connectors will stay on tight. Be sure that before you crimp you place a piece of heat shrink on the cable, Crimp good with a good crimper that dimples the connection, (solder after is also a good thing to do) The move the heat shrink over the wire to crimp connection and shrink it.
