Does anybody know if a MK2 and a Mk3 steering rack will fit in a MK1? Was going to get a rebuild kit and redo mine but then wondered if i could just buy a new one, but seems the Mk1 ones are non existent or rebuilds anyway so was wondering about the Mk2 and Mk3?

They have a wider track than the mk1, so doubt they would work very well, bump steer probably one issue..

There is an electric version available, a modification using I believe a Corsa column

Thanks for the replies! Don't think I want to swap out for the Corsa, for one, not too many here in the states! Lol although I do remember them all over the roads in the UK!
On the MK2, I saw one advertised on ebay and it looked identical to the mk1. Maybes it's listed wrong will see if I can find the links and post it, see what you guys think. But failing that will prob have to go the rebuild route. You ever done that before? It know of a how to guide etc? Thanks

They're (very) different, for a start the Mk1 rack mounts to the bulkhead and the Mk2 rack to the subframe.

I've been think of machining a right-hand drive version of the mk1 hydraulic rack. After that, it would be easy.
Expensive to set up the machines for 1 plus a spare though. I wonder how much interest there would be in these…

I reckon that’s a great idea
I am sure there would be loads of interest, over time, since pretty much everything has PAS these days

Just to close out my own question, I purchased a p/s rack rebuild kit for $36, easy to change out all the seals except the one right in the middle, bit of a pain that one and the real small skinny ones on the steering shaft, had to put them on, then put two jubilee clips on them and leave over night to be squeezed before I could slip the shaft back in to the housing, but other than that it was fairly easy to do. Job done, on to the next one.
