Power Steering Pump Replacement? Help

Post

I need help with my power steering pump, and maybe some answers if possible.

So basically, I need to replace my power steering pump.

I do not think the problem is any worse than that, the power steering virtually does not exist when driving, except for when I turn too far left or right. At that point, if I hold it for too long the engine will stall! On top of this, I sense there is a small leak in one of the tubes, as there is often a very very minimal amount of liquid near the pump fluid holder when I am finished driving.

My first assumption is that the pump is in need of replacing, and I was wondering if A. that was the case, and B. where can I purchase a new power steering pump!?

Any advice or anything would be super helpful!

vw heritage lists one for 159 pounds.

There there are the Power Steering Hoses which are getting to be made of unobtanium.

To loosen the hoses on the rack, I suggest that you loosen the Rack mount so you can get wiggle room and the steering shaft coupler from the rack.

You can get the space you need to remove the rear hose, the front one is easy peasy, but with out the wee bit of wiggle room you can't get to the coupler nut.

Then use the IIRC 19mm or may be 22 cant remember the sizes.

Here is a how to that I did to remove the pump.

When going back I would look for a Product called
SEAFOAM ATF Tune.  It rejuvenates seals and quiets the pump.  I would also suggest before hanging it to squirt a few ML of ATF (Dexron3) into the new to you pump so the pump doesn't run dry.  only need a few ounces of this trans tune then add the Dexron3 to top it off.

I have been using this product for years in my Autos, and Power steering racks.

After you have replaced the pump and hoses top the res, then  after connecting the pump spin the pulley by hand
20 revs so you can get fluid in the lines, You also can replace the belt but leave it loose as you can spin the pulley by hand with a loose belt.

After you get the car started you can then turn the wheel rack stop to rack stop about 6 times to Purge the air out of the system.  Top off the res after the first two cycles.

I was wondering if this is a suitable replacement pump for my Mk1 Golf Cabriolet,

The website states that it will fit but it looks nothing like the Mk1 pump, would I have to purchase mounting parts and a new belt and pulley?

Please let me know if there is any way to get a new power steering pump that wouldn't have to be a conversion!

Can't say.  I think I got mine about 10 years ago, and it was like 89 bucks USD. Mine was genuine Cabriolet mk1.
