new door handles and locks from Heritage

problem with keys

I have just bought some new locks and keys from Heritage to replace the broken ones in my gti 1800cc. The locks fit fine, but when I tried to change the wafers in the locks and use the existing ignition key, I find the thickness of the spurious key is 2mm less than the original keys. This means that "standard" keys won't operate the Heritage locks because the  lock barrel aperture is too thin for a standard key.

Therefore, you can never replace keys in a Heritage lock only use the ones that came with the lock. Heritage effectively said "tough s£$^" when I emailed them.

So don't lose the keys, they are truly irreplaceable

You don't change the wafers, you change the entire lock barrel between the handles and the activation pawls.

You only move the wafers if you need all the keys to be the same as in one key does it all.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

It's good to know. And very frustrating that a lot of the repro stuff is poor quality. What brand are they?

I bought two new bumpers from heritage a few years back and they were absolutely junk, not even fit for purpose.

I needed to change the wafers because I need all the locks to work with the same key as usual with the Golf.
Thanks

Brand of the locks are "JP group"..
bit sad about Heritage bumpers, I've bought a rear one, not fitted it yet.

You take the Barrels out of the handle on the old, and use the whole barrel in to the new handle, that way your keys still work the new handles and there isn't any need to swap the wafers.

If only I had the old barrels. The mazak has corroded away to powder
"colloquially known among UK car restoration hobbyists as monkey metal."
