Help engine trouble
fuel tank, fuel lines, carb rebuilt fuel pump fuel regulator and in line filters
all were going well until about 60 miles up the motorway and I lost power and the car spluttered to a halt. Left it ticketing over on side of mway checked to see fuel was flowing through line ok. Set off again and it did it again and then again about every 30-40 miles at 60-70 mph. Every time I would leave it 10-15mins before setting off.itdoes smell like it's running rich so not sure if carb is set up right, or it's a heat problem. Seems like it's flooding and cutting out. It's fine running around town etc. Just seems to do it at motorway speeds. Any advice or should I take it to a vwspecailist garage

If you do this, make sure you plug both ends of the return line. Or you may find, like I did, that when its parked facing down hill with a full tank, petrol puts out of the open end of the return line, all over your driveway. Ooopps.

I hope it works for you but it does seem weird that there are filters on the return line… This kinda suggested to me that whoever set it up, wasn't really sure of what they were doing. It could be prudent to take it to a garage for a simple tune up check

tempamental Rev counter and fuel gauge.
Well that is a easy fix. Loose connectors on the cluster, or bad 10V stabilizer.
the Stabilizers list anywhere from 15-45 dollars over here on the VW sites.
When in fact they are a Fairchild KA-7810-ate which retail for about .80 cents USD.
A lot of shops don't like electrical work, and they may tell you that a new cluster is warranted, (like you can buy new ones…) But usually the issue is a ground wire on pin 2 is flakey, or a broken trace…..
I have the fix for those in the newbie section loog for my name the for the list.
So just be warned and informed.
One gauge bad Gauge or sender issue… Two gauges acting flakey,,, issue is in the cluster…..Usually

Well she back from garage and running like a peach. He's fitted a restricter into the fuel return so no more fuel starvation. Rebuilt carb as who ever fitted it didn't do it right, also they fitted fuel pump wrong and that was leaking.. I've been on motorway and given it some beans without a problem. Dash gauges are working most of time so leaving it. Gives car character lol plus don't fancy taking dash apart. Been on rolling road as its producing 90bhp so not bad for a 28 yr old car. Well happy.
