MK1 Series 1 GTI Restoration 1979

Hi,

I have undertaken a massive project in the total restoration of an original 1.6 GTI 4 Speed.

On the initial look over the vehicle I will require a pair of genuine S1 wings (condition anything considered).

A genuine bonnet and a spare alloy wheel for the boot, that is providing they came with an alloy in the boot?

The list will become long I am sure, starting next week so any parts of interest please let me know.

Any pics of the project?  

Not taken any yet, it only arrived last Thursday and we have been on holiday since then.  Can't wait to start stripping a down, I will take a few pictures and post them when I return.

Where did you find it?  Good luck in the wings, ive been asking for months as have a few other lads.
What have you got? V reg rhd 4 speed? Colour? Complete or missing bits?

Yep a 4speed 79 on a V plate, Diamond Silver, nothing missing apart from the original wings and bonnet.

I was lucky, needs a full re trim, however all difficult original interior features remain.

Oh, was that the 75k one from Portsmouth/Southampton? Bonnet seems correct from pictures, unless its non genuine, thats easy to get wings not so.

You got it, came from Southampton, nearly purchased it 18 months ago.

Yeah it was on piston heads wasnt it back then?
If you need a bonnet think u are safe with any s2 gti or any cab till 1987.
Has that got s2 wings? Or rough s1?

S1 wings were changed and binned by previous keeper.

You seem to know your stuff, would my car come with a steel or alloys spare?

Im no real expert, I understand the alloys were an option.

What size are the alloys? They should be 13x 51/2 j same if they are steel.

Managed to pick up a 1979 model year brochure and all GTI's came with alloys as standard 175/70/13 5.5 J.

Does not mention the spare.

My car is an April 1979 on a T reg  leaving steels on that one.

Mine is an early 1979, i was lead to believe steels were standard, and the alloys above were an option. But I'm told they were standard fit by others

I got a set of the silver 1s the manhole covers as some call them mines a v reg 1980 model 5 gears
