Mk1 Golf GTi Oil Leak

Hi everyone,

Yesterday was under the car disassembling the gear links to replace the bushes and noticed that the sump was covered with oil. Noticed that the oil filter housing was leaking from the face attached to the engine block so have ordered the gasket.

Another oil leak was from the intermediate shaft seal. So I managed to remove the pulley to access the housing and old seal.

So I thought while I have the timing belt off, why not replace the camshaft seal and crank shaft seal as preventative maintenance.

Got the cam shaft pulley off, however the crank shaft sprocket is a nightmare. There is nothing to clamp it (without damaging it) and use my breaker bar to undo the nut. Tried everything, including using a jack with a wooden block to hold it, with the pulley disc attached, it kept slipping.

I thought I'd ask if there is an easier way to undo this. Otherwise I was thinking to leave it alone, as it is not leaking, and just replace the camshaft and intermediate shaft seals.

Any thoughts?

The easy way to do it was before you took your timing belt off.

Easy way place a Breaker bar on it with the breaker bar braced on the floor, then bump the starter.

With the timing belt you are probably going to need a Impact gun.

I had a bolt that they applied 111 pound of torque on a 60 pound bolt, cost me the crank.

There are 2 styles of Crank bolts, the 6pt, and the 12pt.  The 6pt is set at 111ft/lbs, where as the 12pt is set at 66ish.
Don't put 110 ft/lbs on a 12pt bolt, it will cost you the crank in about 6 months.

You may be able to rent an electric impact…I saw a mew Milwaukee Tool Cordless impact, that had 1100 ft/lbs or torque.

Thanks for the response Briano. I was thinking that too. Should have put it in gear with the handbrake applied and then used the breaker bar.

The crankshaft seal is not leaking so I thought I will leave it now. Seems like a headache and I don't want to risk snapping the bolt.

Mk1 Golf GTi Oil Leak

So decided not to undo the crank shaft sprocket and left it. Replaced the intermediate shaft housing and crankshaft seals. Did the trick.

Also noticed the oil filter housing was leaking so replaced the o-ring and housing to engine gasket.

eBay is great. I sourced all the parts from B and B Components, this supplier is excellent and quality goods at reasonable price.
