Mk1 Golf - Another Mystery Item

Strange remains on the front beam

Morning All,

My Mk1 Cab resto is proceeding at Glacier speed and i am now cleaning years of crud from the engine bay area prior to fitment of the correct engine.

As I'm starting to clean up the "Front Beam" (i.e. the  body member across the front of the car on which the radiator stands)  I've come across the remains of what I'm guessing is some sort of cardboard shroud or baffle adjacent to the radiator.

Can anybody tell me what should be there? Is it important? Can I get another?

I attach a picture which is taken looking down into the engine bay.

Any help gratefully received! Front Beam Question.jpg

They have cardboard (it's posh cardboard) ducting to ensure the air goes through the radiator, rather than around it.
I can't remember where I sourced mine from, however … after a typical last second breakdown before a big trip (radiator sprang a leak?!?) I chucked a spare in and forgot the ducting (found them on the ground after putting it back together).  It made no difference to the temp.

They can go in the nice to have, but not essential list.

yes, looks like the remains of a tab that retained the rad cardboard ducting

Cabby-info.com has templates for the side ducts, but over the years I have found that the only one that is really required is the upper card that goes from the top of the valance to the top of the radiator.

The upper radiator card prevents the engine compartment air to be re-cycled over the radiator at a stop when your fan is running.
