Hi there everyone,
I am having some severe troubles with my MK1 G60 turbo…..On start up it runs really rough…..It will not idle at all…..the fumes from the exhaust are shocking……
black sooty deposits around the exhaust….Am I right in thinking it is running far too rich ??
What could be the problem…I have taken the car to a couple of tuners near me and all they want to do is plug it into a computer to troubleshoot it but as it is running
stock G60 engine management that is not possible…
Any thoughts would be most appreciated….Along with any reliable tuners/garage in the south east of England I might be able to take it to….
Thanks
Michael

Black sooty exhaust is running to rich also removing and looking at the spark plugs will let you know how the car is running.
Have you serviced the car lately, how old is the dissy cap, rotor arm, HT leads, spark plugs?
Does it smell of petrol?
If you want to take it somewhere to look at your car not sure where you are in the south west? This place has good reviews and they know there VWs.

Bosch or Beru are good makes.
Good place to get bits or try Euro car parts or GSF etc.
AVS Car Parts - [The VW - Audi - Seat - Skoda Parts Specialist]
Good price on Quantum oil at the moment (VW uses this stuff)

Definitely sounds like it needs taking to someone who specialises in the g60 management set up. .
Sounds like the ecu is getting signals to increase the fuelling . Maybe check lambda, or check the CO2 pot . Or maybe an earth shorting out

unplug the lambda, if it runs pretty much perfect chances are you need a new one, you may have to give it a bit of a good run up the road to clean up the plugs before it runs right mind. I'd also put a new genuine blue temp sensor on there if its not been done recent.
oh and make sure the vacuum line to the ecu is in good nick and exactly 1 meter long. if its cheap ebay fabric pipe chances are its gone porous, mine lasted all of a month or so! only buy this genuine or get silicone stuff off ebay
make sure the timing belt is set right, use the pictures of the marks in my digifant thread. it also has a chart for testing the blue temp sensor:

Next click the link in my signature then read and follow the G60 docs in there pgigntiming.pdf and pgidleco.pdf in that order

Hi there,
First of all thanks for the answers :-)
I have just changed the blue temp sensor and at first it seemed better….but now its worse !!! took it for a drive and on overrun it backfires like an explosion (flames, smoke and all) will not tickover at all, it just wants to stall. When i got back into my garage i took the connector off of the sensor and while not perfect it runs without backfiring when revving it in the garage and will tickover without stalling…. can i run it temporarily without the sensor plugged in or will it hurt the engine ???
Dont think my car has a lambda sensor…Unfortunately i know exactly zero about cars :-(
It would be plugged into the exhaust right ??
If it is i haven't got one !!!
Any thoughts ???
Thanks
Michael

if its on G60 management it definitely should be running a lambda, without it the ecu wont be 100% happy. some like to not bother fitting the lambda when converting but its not the right way to do it for sure. you'll find it after the turbo on the downpipe, somewhere near the bottom if its there.
but see if you can find the ecu, take a picture of it and/or post up any part numbers you find then we can ID what it is. aftermarket ecu can be setup without a lambda for example
timing is worth a look as well, as I say if its on a digifant ecu look in my signature link for pgigntiming.pdf and pgidleco.pdf

Hi mate,
Pic of the ECU (as far as you can see it)
Changed the dizzy cap and rotor arm…now it wont even start :-( got spark and fuel but just turns over and over……..aaaaargh
On another note i managed to break this…..affixes throttle cable to throttle body….any ideas where i could get one ???
Cheers

yeah some kind of oem management that, most likely g60 ecu since thats whats fitted but may be worth pulling it out for a look. while you're there you can check the ecu vacuum line is still good and 1 meter long, block 1 end with your finger and suck on the other to make sure its not gone porous, or just replace the lot with genuine VW hose or ebay silicone stuff. dont bother with cheaper braided stuff that doesnt last at all as I found out
as for the throttle linkage, I'd assume a mk2 16v/8v part would fit but not sure, may have to have another g60 tb to fix…
