Leaking front windscreen seal

Post

I had a brand new windscreen fitted to my car as the old one had a big crack in it, I noticed when they fitted it the seal at the passengers side bottom corner was sitting further in and if you push on it goes down inside, the chap fitting the screen pulled the seal out and it looked ok, a day later the seal had moved and is very close to the inside edge of the hole for the screen.
I put some kitchen paper on the inside to check for leaks and it does now leak, it's as if the windscreen is to small in that corner and the seal is to far away from the hole!
I phoned the company and they said about possibly using some sealant but would need to come out and have a look, they are coming on Wednesday this week so do I insist on a new windscreen which is the right size or do I let them try and seal it?
If you lift the outer seal there is about 2mm gap between the lower part of the seal and the hole, it's fine on the other corners as I checked to see how they are fitted.

Pictures.

You can't really see in this picture but there is a gap underneath here.

First of all I think this is the first time I've seen you ask for help, you're always giving it! 🤔

As John said new seal or another new seal may be from a different source. Although we know that's no guarantee.

Friend of mine over here had a similar problem 2 years ago.
Bought another new seal and it fitted a treat, no issues to this day! 👍

As above… they're only about £25 as yours hasn't got the gap/cut-out for the chrome trim…

Yes I did reuse my old seal, I cleaned it and covered it in silicone and it's sealed fine in the rest of the screen, it's just the fact that the windscreen seems to be manufactured too small in that corner as the seal is not being pushed out enough to seal properly.

Do I let them fill the gap with sealant or get them to get another windscreen the right size?

New screen without a doubt. 👍
Just filling it out is only a short term solution and come this time next year you'll be doing it all over again! 🤔

Definitely a new seal as well this time. 😉

That is what I was thinking, the car lives out side and is my daily drive so I need it to be water tight especially in that corner above the fuse box!

I did buy a new seal, Febi one but it does not have the same finish as the original one as the new one is just flat unlike the old one??

A couple of better pictures as it's stopped raining,
You can see the design on the windscreen rubber, any one know where I can get one with this finish?

Better picture of the gap 2mm gap I've got in the corner.
You can just see the edge of the seal below the orange tool.

aye screen wants replacing i recon, the febi ones as you say not exactly the same. my mk2 one does have a ridge all the way round but its smooth rather than stepped if you get me

apparently the heritage ones supposed to be good?

Mark I'm confused by the Christmas 🎄 decoration to start with. 😁

But unless I'm very much mistaken that's a standard seal?

I bought mine from werk34 three years ago and no problem. 👍

But if your new screen is not perfect, slightly off or not true whatever how's the seal going to help.

Stating the bleeding obvious but… 🤔

Oh yes tinsel and lights fitted along the dash, Christmas has arrived in my car as well as the house!

Yes that is an original seal as the windscreen removed was the original VW one, its was doing well till this stone happened just above the drivers side wiper.

I'll try and order a new seal from VW heritage as advised by rubjonny.

Many thanks, to all for your help and advice.

one thing that may be worth doing is mock up the screen in the hole without a seal, that'll show you for sure if the screen is the wrong shape or not as you'll see if the gap all the way round it is even

if you plan to remove the screen yourself what I do is get a stanley knife and pop a new blade in it, then carefully cut the inner lip all the way round that holds the glass in from the outside. Aim to score a deep-ish cut all the way trying to get near to but not touch the glass. Then grab it and pull upwards it'll peel out nice all the way round. keep at it till the glass can just be lifted out without putting any kind of force on it, that way you're guaranteed not to crack the glass

2nd tip is check your new seal is made properly before you do this! I didn't and found my new seal was glued together with a 180 degree twist in it but only after I had cut up the old seal. So had to call in an emergency favour from a mate to get another 2nd hand one sharpish

Over here some of the replacement seals aren't as wide as the oem, and take a lot of fineggaling to get right.

On my  OEM 81 rabbit the seal was at least 1/8 of an in if not a tad more over the lip.  This is true of my 92 with no rust original seal and screen.

Was it the screen buddy ?

The company that fitted the new windscreen came out and put some sealant around the screen and 5 years later it's still not leaked so I guess it worked.
My car lives outside so I have been checking every now and then

It was a local windscreen place, as when I talked to the bigger well know places they talked about bonding the windscreen in !!!

I paid them directly as it was not much more than my insurance excess and it saved the faff of going through my insurance company.
The guy who owed the company also has a Mk1 golf
