how are these fitted?
Hi,
Just wondering if the spade connectors face the nearside? or the offside?
and does the metal bulb holder sit inside the tailgate? and the lens outside? or everything outside?
I also have 2 stainless screws and 2 plastic washers for each light
many thanks

Looks like they can go only one way - I offered them up to the tailgate and spade connectors face offside - and it looks like everything sits outside the tailgate - would be useful for someone to confirm?
I've also looked at the cabling - this is all I have to connect the lights - is there something missing? the smaller spade clips ( green and white cables) don't seem to have anything to connect to? and there are 3 of them - there are 4 connectors on the lights and only 2 bigger spades attached to the brown cables.
what goes where?
many thanks.

The feed on my car was power in on the top connector, and Earth/Ground on the base plate that screwed into the body.
I would use insulated crimp connectors not bare specially for the +12v
It fed as you are looking at it from the left side to the right and the two right wires fed through a harness strap on the top of the lock assy.

Brilliant knowledge - thanks once again Bri. I guess the old lights had a smaller spade connector - so I'll need to cut & recrimp those green cables.
Any idea why there are 3 green/white cables when there are only 2 lights? ?
and does the entire light assembly sit outside the tailgate? - would you have a pic if your connections? or what they look like from the outside?
sorry for being a PIA!

Well they get power from the light in the boot.
that is one of the green/gray cables goes from there to the left side light. Then from the second spad take off over to the right side light. The Ground (brown) wire goes over from the right light to the left light then over to the main ground point on the rear tail light ground bar.
For the rear tail light main ground wires intead of jumpering the left to the right, I opted to run a separate ground from the left and right bumper bolt with a large ring connector.
The schematic looks the same for the mid 85's and 90's
91
85-89
Never made any pictures of the bulb holders, I just had to replace the bulbs, and clean the lenses.

Thanks Bri - I think I'm OK with the connections at the rear tail light - I'm just not sure where these 3 spade clips go ( circled in yellow below) and why is there 3 when there are only 2 lights?
thanks

You need to refer to the Bentley.
Here is a quick rear tail light diagram.
