Ignition switch replacement

Hi guys,

Stumped with the key/barrel assembly removel on my mk1 90 gti.
Got it all stripped down but the silver bit wont slide off the steering shaft, got the bolt removed and the steering lock isn't engaged so dont see why it wont slide forward, it does have a small amount of rotational movement but zero forward.

I have tried it with the barrel in and removed still nothing!

No the bolt is removed, it just seems really tight and won't move forward

Not familiar with cabbys ,  but does that not have a spline adaptor on,  if so is that in the way..

Agree, pre @ 88 it would pull up and off. Post @ 88 there is an adaptor on the original spline that stops it. Apprently it's a FT fit, good luck. 

Thanks, it's a 90 spec cabby, so I think the spline thing is gonna need to come off

Naw, gently pry the piece apart where the shear bolt was so that you get it to be about 1/4 inch apart.  It will then be able to be removed if you turn your key on to release the latch, if you haven't taken the steering lock off you need to turn the key, then slightly turn the wheel….or center shaft.

I have the shear bolt out and separated the 2 halfs slightly but still nothing, no forward movement at all.

Do I need to remove the spline adaptor where the steering wheel slides on to?

I never had to and I have the Air-bag on mine.  You do have to pry it about 1/4 inch on the upper and lower.
Then the key has to be turned to release the steering wheel lock.  Sometimes you have to slightly move the shaft to release the lock.  If the lock isn't released you won't get any movement on the shaft.
