worn guide hole
finally getting some time to look at my golf, stuck my head under the bonnet today for a mooch about and noticed clutch cable at funny angle. took cable out of guide (which was knackered) and saw this. have ordered new guide, washer and end plates but need advice on what to do about this mess, find a friendly welder?

The reason your cable did that was that it was old and dirty and the grit and probably a tad out of adjustment caused it to slice through the metal. I have seen it do that on both ends by the pedal and the tranny. You could clean the metal and affix a Steel Fender Washer with some JB-Weld full strength. You could even clean the heck out of it tape it on the bottom and fill with JB as well.
That isn't that bad of damage, I have seen worse.
Just be sure that your new cable sits correctly.
