Have I set the timing correctly?

Post

I've doubly doubly doubly checked,   but can people please confirm I've done the timing right…..

92 Mk1 GTI Cabriolet,   previously converted to KR16v on motorbike carbs.   ran ok but engine was well worn when I bought it so fitted replacement.

Now Timing how I have it is -

Bottom crank pulley, marks lined up at top TDC
Cam pulley lined up at top TDC
Piston one is at TDC
Flywheel is on TDC (not the 6 BTDC)
The distributer hasn't got a notch,  but where all above is at TDC the rotor arm should point to lead no. 1… Yes???

Rotor arm turns forwards (anticlockwise when looking from distributer side)

Lead 1 where rotor is at TDC,  then lead 3, 4 and 2

Please please confirm I have all this correct as it just won't fire on no. 3 and 4..!

Thanks
Wilson

Sounds about right.
I never use the pulley marks.
I align the Crank using the finger on the transmission.
I align the Cam so the dimple on the back is even with the Valve cover tin (not rebar) or on a 90 that is Digi to the 0 mark that is on the rear timing belt cover.  There is the 0 | T reference that the | is the actual mark, but on a Digi if you look at the back there is still the dimple that
aligns with the Valve cover.
I set the Dizz so that the rotor is in the middle of the hash that is stamped on the side frame of the dizz.  I don't try to rotate the Dizz to the pulley marks…ever.

Now if your dizz is pointing to a cylinder that is you have it so in effect you could be a few degrees on or off the mark.

The dizz when aligned is at 12-1:30 usually and that is plug 1.  Then in Clock wise  or to the right in order from plug 1 is plug 3, then 4 (opposite to 1) then 2.

http://cabby-info.com/Files/SparkPlugs.pdf has pretty pictures of this.

I can't imagine a Dizz without a mark for 1 cylinder.

Now with all this said, I did get a set of plugs (bosch triple fingered plats) that had a bad plug in it, and the second set I got had 2 bad plugs in the box.  You might want to swap the plugs to make sure you haven't got a issue, as well as you removed the tip on the end (depends on which type of wire set you have) so the wire clicks firmly in place. At the time I was trying to diagnose a bad running car, I also had a bad plug wire on it.  So trying to find a bad wire, I got a bad set of plugs, followed by another bad set of plugs that were worse, all to find out that my Original Plugs were good, and I had a bad HV wire…. (I was glad I had 2 cabbies to play with)….

On a digifant car, or CIS-e you can set the timing using a DVOM, on the bottom link I posted is a write up at the bottom that tells you how to do it.
It by ways and means also tests your Hall Effect sender…

I have had ICM's flake out after my Dizz broke the Hall Sender bracket and it shorted out…
