German to English translators ? Binnacle wiring

Hi all, sorry, I’m not being lazy, google is doing my head in….

Are there any German speakers out there that could translate this for me….

Many of these are abbreviations, so context would help. Can you give us a clue what we're looking at?

The numbers are the pins on the binnacle.
2 is earth
14 is Battery B+
from your Bentley
The Cluster diagrams you the look up the 'T number/pin number on your cluster and you can tell what the wire and pin are doing.

Briano, we don't have Bentley over this side of the pond, we have Haynes but they are generally as useful as a chocolate tea pot.

I've added some suggestions, mainly based on guesswork below, so don't rely on this. As Briano1234 says, the wiring diagram should in theory help, but as you suggest, the one included in the Haynes manual is hard to relate to reality.

5. Possibly Kuelmittel - Coolant temperature warning light?
6. Clock
7. Fernlicht - Main beam warning light
8. Brake something - braking power, brake pad warning or possibly an early German word for airbag, as per Briano1234's picture?
9. oil ? Possibly oil pressure warning light?
10. OCDC - Briano1234's picture suggests emissions control system warning light?
11. Oil ? Possibly oil temperature/pressure gauge?
12. Load something - possibly vacuum/economy gauge?
13. "blink " I assume indicator
14. 12V +

Na, I used a Haynes as my sole Manual for 20 years keeping my 81 Rabbit Diesel (LS) running great.  So I am used to wonderful world of Haynes, as it was written for 1980 not 81 specifically.

I actually prefer the Haynes over the Bentley for the wiring as it is a cleaner copy of the VW tech manuals than Bentley used.  (Crisper and not shaded gray areas)

 

If you do a search for the wiring of the plug that goes on the binnacle you will find a diagram with it all marked up.

I can't find anything with google. It's a caddy diesel so the binnacle is different to other european golfs or westies/ rabbits

If it's a diesel, I'm guessing one of the terminals is for a glow plug warning light?

8. Bremsk - translates as brakes, I can't think what on the dash is related to brakes ?

12. Laden - yeah, I'd say something to do with load perhaps. Dunno ?🤷‍♂️🫤

Anyhoo,

Everything seems to work except the fuel and temp gauge now.

We were getting 10V from the new stabiliser thingy, but now it's dropped to 4.8V.

 My mate thinks it could be the ignition switch gone high resistance, and it does feel a bit crunchy inside when operated, so I've ordered a new one of them and try that.

The 10V stabilizer gets 12V B+ from the black wire on the connector.  It gets the ground or Earth from the brown wire.  

If both gauges are wonky, then that is the primary suspect if you have the following from the bentley for diagnosing.



The stabilizer is avail at a few VW sources, but they want over 35 -60 USD for one. However a KA5810-aet is the same from a Electronics supplier or the interweb @ 58 cents.

10. OCDC could be the glow plug light, because the wire colour is blue/green . Huzza !

It's just what the heck is bremsk on the binnacle ?

I've followed your advise (superb)

I've proved the gauges deflect by power probing them, I've cleaned all the contacts up, added the piece of tape to bulk up the main connector.

Using the multimeter I've measured 12v + and have a good ground with zero resistance

I had low voltage from the stabiliser and changed that out for a new one, which is now giving 4.8v which I'm sure was 9.8v after I originally fitted it - I bought two of these so might try the spare one, after I've replaced the ignition switch to rule that out….

Head scratching, but getting there.

And the next challenge is the rear lights, because the caddy came to me with no wires from fuse box to rear lamps - I've sourced another rear light harness and fitted it, I've just to decipher the wiring colours etc to work out which wire wants to do what ….. gotta love a challenge !

Welcome to the POS forum.  Previous Owners Screwup's,  Having owed quite a few of these types of things.  

I learned Electrics from Lucas, and if Lord Lucas was the Prince of Darkness, Bosch is his Protege.

After about 5 years of VWness, I finally Figured out the wiring diagrams and how to read them.  (after being in Electronics for about 10 years reading a vast array of Schematics, Aircraft, Mainframe computers, Building Blueprints and such.

Some of the earliest books that I read on electrics and such taught that current flowed from Positive to the Negative these being written in the 40's, 50's and 60's.  Going to a good Electrics programme startnig in the 70's, finding out that it really flowed Negative to Positive was to say challenging me at the start.

jazzydog - have a read of this doc I typed up. It may assist although it's based on my UK 1984 Cabby GTI.
