Post

i have an 85 cc cabrio dx which im restoring for my wife
someones fitted a 6w gearbox
now im going to be fitting a new clutch as its really stiff so gearbox is going to be out/
its always crunched between 1 & 2nd and recently i heard it whining which has since stopped .
ive been given another gearbox code 4t

can anyone confirm drive shafts will fit & can i swap the clutch over?

Original size clutch should fit either gearbox.

Best to measure the drive shafts flanges, get a bit of string and measure around the flange to check they are the same length if the gearbox is fitted to the car or if both gearboxes or off measure across the flange. Either size flange (90mm or 100mm) could of been fitted.

Its worth fitting a new seal on the input shaft and check for play on the push rod when the box is off.

Thank you
Just cleaning this box up so I examine it-
As told ' good condition ' but it was covered in oil & dirt….

Im assuming lsd was never fitted so why can i rotate cv in opposite directions by hand?
Would it be common to be stiff?

I think mine also went in opposite direction but not 100% sure as it was a few years ago I had it out on the bench.

Well worth draining the gearbox oil and filling with fully synthetic gearbox oil (you will have to have it back on the car and on level ground to fill it)

Where abouts in the country are you as I might be interested in your 6W gearbox, I have a home made flange removal tool so could help out if seals need replacing as I've done it a few times as I just fitted new seals all round as it's easier when gearbox is out of the car.
PM me if easier or if don't want to give out your location…

That's a pain on the diff.

You can swop the flanges from 90mm to 100mm or vice versa, I had to fit the original flanges from my old gearbox when I changed my gearbox over as that had 90mm flanges and my car had 100mm flanges.

So don't worry to much about flange size when finding a replacement.

4T gearbox's are the 4 +E gearbox (tall 5th gear) fitted to carb cars that's my most have 90mm flanges.

Search Mk2 and early Mk3 Golfs as they had the same 020 gearbox..

I'm busy at work for the next few weeks then it's School holidays (I work at a school) happy to pop down if you need any help, what to use my drive shaft flange tool etc.  :thumbs:You can can see it in action here…
