I’m going to change the gearbox oil in my 90 clipper five speed manual.
Having ordered the 17mm hex socket I need to order 2 ltrs of oil but which type would be
better suited to a vehicle that’s done 104,000 miles ?
Thanks

The driver's driveshaft flange seal started leaking a few months ago on my 1983 Cab Gti 180k miles.
Changed the gear oil after doing the seal using Morris Lodexol Gearbox Oil 80/90w from heritage, about 1000 miles done since, all good.

VW recommend GL4. GL5 can apparently be corrosive to synchromesh systems, due to the high level of additives

5L. it only takes 2L to refil a manual.
What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Yes I was going to buy 3L so I had some spare just in case of spillage / top up but it worked out cheaper to buy 5L with postage included £37.30Briano1234 said

If you can "Easily" remove your Speedo cable, you ca top fill with but a long spouted funnel.
On the gear oil that I used there was a spout on the top, to that I affixed a vinyl tube once,
On a side note if you place your oil in a pot of HOT water for a few minutes, it will be easier to pour.
Notice I said "IF you can Easily remove your speedo cable" as it can be a PITA to remove so take care.
Some like me never had an issue removing the Speedo cables on my 81 diesel Golf's 4 or 5spd transmission for 20 years, and my 90 Cabriolet. I did tend to Jack both wheels up, place in 1st gear and spin the wheels forwards and back wards a bit to release any gear bind just in case, or I was blessed with nice cables.
On my 92, and 93 cabbies they were Auto's and that is a horse of a different color.
