Gearbox Flange Seal

Post

Did I really do this???

Replaced the outer near side cv joint but left it attached to the box on the inner cv side because I didn't have the splined tool.

Knocked the cv off with a hammer, rebuilt and oiled and replaced with new washers grease and circlips.  All is well so I thought.

Then looked under the car and there is a pool of oil. ON closer inspection coming from the offside gearbox flange seal and the seal looks as if it has come out.  Could tapping the outer opposite CV on have pushed this out?

And for replacement is it possible to tap it back in (first attempts say no) or do i have to take off the offside driveshaft and then get a flange puller in order to replace and re-seat it?

Any tips of tricks would be very helpful here, including where to get a flange puller if needed!

Thanks

In theory the GB flanges are held on with a circlip under pressure from a big spring so unless you've had to really wallop the outer CV joint to get it off I'd say no. However 30/40 year old stuff doesn't like being disturbed.

You don't need a puller to get it off, in fact the big spring will fling it off and nearly kill you. The hassle is getting it back on and re fitting the circip.
