fuel metering problem?

im having problems with fuel.if I take the rubber airinlet off and pour fuel down my gti will start instantly then stop when the fuel runs dry.I have fuel going to the metering unit but no further .anybody got any ideas what could be wrong? thanks folks

Had the car been off the road and not run for a while?
There is a pin inside the meter head which the flap moves and that controls the fuel, that can rust in place if car just sat around.

thanks .had a look today and that was the problem .took the unit to bits and took out the pin/valve gave it a rub with fine paper,and reassembled,car now running lovely.it had been off road for a couple of years,so getting it ready to go back on the road.the joys of a 35year old car
