Managed to put my front n/s suspension back together today but somehow managed to miss out the load washer that sits on top of the bump stop. How important is this washer? What are implications if it not being there?
I didn’t touch the O/S so I’m guessing the o/s DOES have the load washer.

It dosnt actually sit on top of the bump stop, it sits where the threaded part of the shaft thickens just under the spring cap. I always refit them, vw felt a need to use them..

Same thing isn't it?
Position 1 on attached diagram.
The bump stop wouldn't go any further down the shaft and sits on the collar at the thicker part. washer would just sit on top of that right?
What purpose you reckon it has?

I always thought that washer spread the load of the strut on the spring cap. The shoulder on the strut isn't all that wide and without the washer it could push through the cap.

The washer becomes part of a sandwich.
it stops the strut from pushing up through the center bearing. The washer on top holds it tight to the bearing so that there is no up or down play in the Strut Cartridge shaft to the bearing, and allows it to easily pivot inside of the bearing….
On some of the mounts that I have gotten I have had to file the inner bearing a bit more flush as there was too much play between the shaft and the bearing to the washer on top under load of the suspension. Leads to pre-mature failure of the mount and a small hammering noise on a bump.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.

I would.
We once drove a Mk2 around for a week or so without that washer because I lost it when we dismantled the strut, it was okay.
