Welcome to the Club karl first of all.
If you don't have any luck finding them in the UK which I'd be a little surprised try www.werk34.de
Their a good bunch and do ship to the uk, so try this link https://www.werk34.de/index.php/cat/c1573_Brake-System.html some of the website is in English as well.
Would be great if you could post up some pictures of your 1974!

What have you got fitted to the car?
I did not think VW fitted drums to the front of the car and they all had disc brakes and needed brake pads?
I had not problem finding pads for my 1978 scirocco they are like this.

genuine VW pads, and lots on eBay.
Brake shoes for drums and brake pads for discs.
getting hold of rear shoes for early manual adjustment drums are a little harder to find but they are still out there.

Yes, getting them relined is next step if I cannot find any. Just would have been cool finding a supplier to source parts for this one. I've been playing with these things for thirty odd years and still own quite a few but this thing is from another planet, it's like working on a 60,s Beetle. In fact, there are some Beetle touches on it.

very rare beast that mk1 with front drums, the liners are part number 113698075 same ones used on various beetle and transporter. Quick google got me this for a full set of shoes so even better no need to try and reuse the old shoes:

and drum is 171609215A which is mk1 specific and I get nothing from google
