Flywheel timing marks - 1.8 DX

Post

Afternoon all,

Quick Q - I only seem to have one mark on my flywheel, from other pics I've seen online this looks like the proper 6 deg BTDC timing mark and not the TDC mark (which is apparently just a dot). Is this correct? Marked in white paint below…

If it's any help I do remember seeing that new flywheels have only the TDC mark, you have to put the timing mark on to suit the engine. Your flywheel could have been replaced but the timing mark was not done.

Surely it is not to hard to work out TDC then
ti figure things out in what direction you need
to go BTDC OR TDCC

Do not know a lot but willing to help if possible

I know it's not hard, but I have the opportunity to get it right before I put the gearbox back on.

So is the consensus that if there is only one mark, it's probably not the timing mark? It's odd because it's the right shape for the timing mark, but I'd expect to see a TDC mark.
Engine is at TDC so I'll put the gbox on and see what the pointer points to!

It's in the Haynes Mk2 manual, they say for a 1.8 EV engine 6deg equates to 12.5mm so the DX should be the same.

I do know that some replacement parts are marked with a slash at 0TDC and others state that the slash is 6BTDC….. with out knowing the maker the only sure fire way is to move the engine so that the number 1 piston is at the top of the cylinder and the cams lobes are pointing straight up…. Then if the Dizzy rotor is in the mid hash mark then that mark is 0 and not 6btdc.  if when the piston is not fully up,  the cam is slighty not straight up and the diz rotor is not centered under that hash then it is usually 6BTDC . This is about the only way to tell on a new to you part that you have no history of….

It was way funner on a Diesel…If it wasn't at 0…

Oh and the cam dot on the back side when even with the Valve cover tin, tells you that your Cam lobes for number 1 cylinder are straight up.

Cheers Steve!
I can confirm that after managing to get the gearbox on the block all by my socially distancing self, that the mark I have is not tdc, so I think Steve has called it correctly!

What, you have to have friends to help you hang a Tranny?  Opps that is a PC incorrect statement and could be construed differently as term meaning have changed lately…  :)You need help in replacing a Transmission…. I have done it unassisted for years… In my youth, I would grunt and do it…. Now I use a ratcheting strap or two.  :) . To be honest those cranks bolts are offset so you can't get it on wrong…well if you are Murphy, I suppose you can, No I am not slamming the IRISH… its that just as Ohms made his Sparking and arcing laws, Murphy's Law can apply as well. Dang nab it the PC police……… Jerry Rig, Irish re-engineering…. all terms of my 50's-60's-70's youth, and I know what I meant to say, not how's you heard it with Millenial ears….

Since the last few weeks, I keep hearing Eric Carmen's "All By Myself"  shoot there I go again, I suspect that this should be moved to the "Tune of the Day" thread. :):):):)Yes I sell Commodes, so I tell Corny, and Thomas Crapper and Sons jokes.

If it is indeed your TDC mark I would touch it with a drill to make it a bit clearer.

yep that could be misconstrued, but I know what you meant. I'm well past millenial!

I'm pretty sure I only had assitance in days gone by because of the free beers and fags (sorry, smokes to you over the pond).

If I can get to it now I've got the box on! I'm sure I can get a dremel in there….
