Exhaust manifold replacement? My golf makes me nauseous lol Mk1 gti 1.8 8v Dx cabriolet

Pictures in thread, have the toilet bowl set up and it blows literally

I currently have a toilet bowl/c clamp set up on my mk1 golf gti 8v cabriolet, the exhaust manifold join to downpipe had a solid ring (that cracked) 

I replaced the gasket with a wire mesh gasket and that just blew, added new c clamps and paste to the gasket and it still blows slightly but enough to make me nauseous driving (I roll down the window or take roof off) 

I am looking for a replacement manifold to downpipe set up or something but I have no clue what to buy, I'd take new or used parts I don't care just sick of feeling sick when I drive the car now picks under
I'd like links or options as to what I can fit to my golf, even if the six bolt set up would work from a mk2 or something I don't know ? Please help Haha   IMG_3583.JPG IMG_3584.JPG IMG_4072.JPG image.jpg

Yeah it's a DX year 1987 Reg is D636MUB A DUB DUB… I really need to stop the blow from
The join, I was thinking a 4 branch manifold or a 6bolt flange with downpipe but don't know if I can get hold of the right part ? Or if people on here know of anything that's a direct fit etc or if people Are selling them here too ??

I've done piston rings and the lot on this car it's a silly problem but a big problem because it's making me ill lol

Fumes from your engine should not be getting into the car, you must have a missing grommet on the bulk head or the Steering rack UJ rubber boot is old and split/got holes in it.

There should also be a foam wedge/gasket inside the car at the end of the steering column which fits in the rubber boot.
This will reduce alot of noise and fumes from the exhaust down pipe.

The Toilet bowel Manifold is the Strongest one built for the early rabbit used up to the 90 cabby, when they changed to a cost reduced version that every one of my 90's had.




The 4-2 manifold off a g60 was better, and that is what I went with along with a SS dual down from TTtuning.
Pricey at 300 bucks for both.

The Toilet Bowl flange is very robust, and with a new Gasket it usually leak free.  I had that on my Diesel for 20 years, and I replaced the Gasket about 4 times over that span.  I would imagine that your Clips could be weak, but again mine were tighter than a MO-FO.

VERIFY WHERE THE LEAK IS COMING FROM.
That is very easy to do….

Place your car out side, and pop the hood.
Add Seafoam Engine Treatment to one of your engine vacuum lines…. You will see smoke…Lots of it.

Then you can verify that your manifold is tight to the block, and or your manifold is cracked,  or that the connection between your manifold and flange is bad.

If you didn't replace the Exhaust manifold gasket, then that may be one issue.

I also had a Exhaust manifold stud back out.  which cause a leak.

I have never had fumes per say in the Cabin with my Cracked ones as you should also verify that all your seals and gaskets in the Raintray and Firewall are intact.

I have also heard of the Rubber boot on the shifter getting holed, and that a bad connection on the resonator caused fumes to come up through the shifter.

Did you use gasgets that look like this to change yours ? As mine only started to leak from the "toilet bowel" section once I fitted this wire mesh version of the doughnut

Where as Autohausaz shows the mesh.
VW heritage shows a solid and a mesh
the solid being 855253137A

That solid gasket seems to have three points on it so I doubt it'll fit right? I called vw themselves and asked if they have them and they discontinued the solid ring? Why lol ?

GSF used to sell the metal ring type as that is where I got mine from may years ago.

This might be it but not 100% sure, phone call might be the option?

Just another Evil thought…. Years ago in my British Leyland days…. I had a Exhaust leak from the BL manifold joint (similar to the VW but used a clamp to hold the manifold to the Down pipe.)….

Take the Mesh Gasket, and using Tin Foil Aluminum Foil
Wrap the gasket you have mesh with heavy duty foil to prevent the gas from getting through the mesh.

They also make a 1200 degree exhaust pipe repair goo, that  can be used to sort of seal the mesh as well.  It is Ceramic and metal flakes suspended in a rosin….

But try the tin foil, you can bend that to internally seal the mesh and hole it, and it should be gas tight….

With the exhaust paste just add more as I find after a few months it starts to fall off any way.

Wait over night at the least for the new stuff to harden off before starting the car, start the car and listen out for any leaks if you need to pin point them get a bit of garden hose to find the leak, switch the engine off and add more paste and again leave for a few hours to harden off before starting.

I found starting the car when the gunk is still wet just seems to blow it out.
