Exhaust manifold to Downpipe gasket.

DX engine mk1 golf gti (suspected) exhaust leak. C clamp circular metal gasket.  Picture

I'm looking for information to fit his part between my exhaust downpipe and manifold. Also advice on removal of the other one in its place as it's a bit stiff.

My question is do I use some kind of exhaust paste on this mesh gasket or fit it dry. I will be using new C clamps. I'm attempting to remedy a suspected exhaust leak from the manifold area which sounds like linking under load. To eliminate this from the cause of a "sewing machine" kind of noise under load.

I have timed my engine to what I feel is correct with the help of a member on this site and a timing strobe to 6 degrees btdc so I believe it could just be a manifold leak and would like help fitting this part.

Thank you.

The old Toilet Bowl Flange Seal.

I never used anything on my Diesel Bunny as far as paste.

You can spring the Clips off with a Phillips in the hole, but mine your face and eyes as those suckers can fly.

To place them back on, just use a muffler clamp backwards or spend the big bucks and buy the tool.

Exhaust manifold to Downpipe gasket.

That's the tool. I bought one for my mechanic to use when he did this on mine. It broke during the job but lasted long enough to get it done.

Mine also sounded like a sewing machine. I think it was a crack in the manifold - new gaskets and a replacement manifold sorted it out.

Update, I replaced the gasket and c clamps and it made it much worse! It blew from that area badly, I removed the gasket and put paste on it and the surrounding area and it seemed to quieten down but it's still there slightly (the blow).. the old ring was solid metal with a slight crack, this one is mesh and it's rubbish.. what did you replace yours with and do you have a link to where you got it

I used one of the mesh gaskets. I can't remember where it was from – probably VW Heritage. Did you replace the C clamps at the same time?

Harry, don't open new threads….for the same issue stay with the original post .

I forgot to mention the additional things that you have to take in consideration.

On non ac equipped cars the blower motor is in line and above the exhaust, it you don't have the seal that seals the hood to the Rain tray that is another issue that needs to be addressed.

If your exhaust pipes hangers are weak and not supporting the exhaust pipe, then all the weight of the pipe is on the Spring clamps and every little bump can cause momentary separation at the flange.

A lot of questions need to be addressed…..
