If it runs for awhile, won't idle and then cuts out, it has a spark, it is more than likely the fuel / air / vacuum / timing related.
CHECKING SPARK
Check the spark 1st before changing the distributor.
take out a number 1 spark plug, connect the plug lead and rest in the engine lift eye (arrowed), or on rocker cover to earth.
Turn the ignition key to start the car for a couple of seconds and you will see the spark, helps if in garage or dark.

The spark should have a blue color, like here:
