Hi everyone, so my car has stopped running, it's extremely difficult to start and when it does it won't idle and cuts out. I am ticking things off that it might be and I thought I'd change the dizzy cap and rotor arm. The only trouble is it looks like there a few varieties and I don't know which. The car is a 1983 mk1 GTI tin top running a DX engine. I know the dizzy cap is not the pin type and I believe the distributor is bosh. What cap and rotor a do I need? Please help as it's my daily drive and I need to get to work

I've just changed them on mine, is 1990 though so might be different? Photo attached of what I fitted.

Hi
If it runs for awhile, won't idle and then cuts out, it has a spark, it is more than likely the fuel / air / vacuum / timing related.
CHECKING SPARK
Check the spark 1st before changing the distributor.
take out a number 1 spark plug, connect the plug lead and rest in the engine lift eye (arrowed), or on rocker cover to earth.
Turn the ignition key to start the car for a couple of seconds and you will see the spark, helps if in garage or dark.
The spark should have a blue color, like here:
