Ignition issues
I'm having start-up issues after a long rebuild (currently working my way through the usual potential issues, partly with the help of numerous forum posts).
I've got spark at the king lead, so now focussed on the dizzy. First off, I want to make sure I have the correct one - can anyone please confirm the correct ignition distributor part number for my Mk1 Golf 1.6 GTi, EG, tintop, 1982? (UK reg no. WFJ 370X if that helps)
The numbers on the current dizzy appear to read: 0237 023 003, and below: 037 905 205.
Thanks in advance

The numbers on the distributor body may well be manufacturing codes rather than part numbers. The second number has the right format for a part number but will likely have superseded multiple times over the following decade or more. The last 7 digits of that number match the number showing against EG engine code in the "distributor versions" page of the part diagrams, so that might provide some evidence towards the distributor being correct for your engine
Thanks - Etka shows multiple versions of '… 905 205', with different numbers at the start and letters afterwards. I just cant see anywhere where it tells you which is for which model of Gti / engine / etc.

It's an odd one, normally the Bosch numbers are relatively straight forward to follow, but not in this case.
I'm getting 0 986 237 638 as the replacement number Bosch would give VW 037 905 205 dizzies that have gone back to them for remanufacture, but when I try to reverse check, to find the original Bosch number I'm getting something else entirely.
Elsewhere I'm seeing 0 237 023 001 is the Bosch number for 1.6 EG's from 8/80, can you double check what yours is before I go down the wrong rabbit hole?

I can see that 7 905 205 is listed against EG engine code which as i recall is 1.6 Golf GTi
Yeah, the ETKA part numbers for the distributors appear to be missing the first two digits. The ETKA download on Catcar has an additional 2 digits in front of the part number suggesting the full part number for EG engine code may have been be 067 905 205, with the first two digits having become detached from the part number when the microfiches were scanned into ETKA. It is not unusual for the first two digits of the part number to change when a part supersedes, so it's perfectly possible the part number may have been 037 905 205 in 1982 superseding to 067 905 205 at a later date.
I guess the only definitive way to confirm would be to find another 1982 1.6 GTI with known provenance for comparison

Thanks all - ill have to sand back the paint to get a better reading.
The good news is if it is 067 905 205, a replacement is only £640!
