Dashboard ribbon nightmare

Hi, on a 1987 mk1 the dashboard blue ribbon has disintegrated.
Quite hard to drive without dashboard and with no spare car could do with a solution ASAP please.
I've seen the vw t25 has a similar dashboard and camper culture has come up with a kit using normal wire not ribbon.
Maybe like should have been used in first place.
Ideas please?????
Ps does the south African citie use similar parts?
