Cylinder head nightmare

Post

Having a nightmare with my sportline. Head gasket went dumped the radiator at some traffic lights on the way to pick up the guy from the railway station who was going to buy it. Typical as in 10 years of ownership nothing has ever gone wrong until now.
Took th head off, had it pressure tested and skimmed, new bolts new cam belt oil filter, oil etc. Bought a Victor Rienz head set and rather foolishly did not keep the old one to check it against.
After getting it all back together fired up no problem  then I realised it was pouring water out of the head gasket joint.
My torque wrench is 6 month old Britool with a calibration cert however I am not sure about the torque settings. This is what I used.
1- 40 Nm
2- 60Nm
3- further half turn
I also noted some of the port profiles in the gasket were not as the per the shape of the exports in the head gasket did not match the shape of the ports in the block and the head and a couple did not have any cut out at all. I think I may have had the wrong head set.
Should i go to VW and get a genuine part and are these the correct torque settings. These are out of the brown haynes manual
Cheers in advance for any help.
I checked the head again and it is flat and not warped
One good thing came out of it I can now take a head off from the engine running in 37 minutes!

Just noticed the Victor reined gasket does not have 3 of the water jacket ports that are in the head and block . therefore 3 of them are effectively blanked. Called VW and the head gasket is now obsolete.
I called VW heritage  as the photograph of their head gasket shows all the ports as per the head and block cut out except one which is adjacent ( to the right ) to the two holes that are connected between cylinders 3 & 4 at the front of the block.
I may be barking up the wrong tree here but if the ports were blanked would the pressure build up at that point and consequently the coolant  try to find a path of least resistance blow out the gasket?
I spoke to the guys at VW heritage where  I have ordered a gasket from. I have always fitted steel gaskets to the engines I have built in the past as I was usually going to race them but don't seem to be able to find one only composites

if you really have to have a steel gasket the Golf G60 one will fit part number 037103383L, but there is really no need

if it puts your mind at rest I've used loads of elring 1.6-1.8 gaskets, including one for my mk1 16v and they have all been perfect.

check the one originally supplied was correct for your car, I dont suppose it has any part numbers on it or if you got the original packaging/receipt?

Ok that's fine,
I have ordered one from VW heritage should be here tomorrow. Thanks for the info on the timing marks too by the way. I have the same issue with the missing dot on the flywheel. It started and ran first time hopefully I can get it back together tomorrow with a bit more success than yesterday . What about the torque settings 40-60 and then half a turn,,,is that correct just seems a little odd as I am used to definitive torque values
Cheers

yeah that is the correct tightening procedure, you can do the final stage as 2x 90 degree turns if you prefer either way is fine

I'm only saying this because it might genuinely help me.  Please don't shoot me because I know you've probably not fallen into this trap but…

The gasket isn't upside down is it?

There, I've said it, it's out there.  I know it's 99.999% the right way up but I thought I'd add it to the topic, just on the off-chance it helps you.
