Clutch cable pulled through

All of a sudden there was a bang and the clutch pedal hit the floor.
First thoughts were a snapped cable or bulkhead had been pulled through which was unlikely as it had a repair plate fitted before i bought it.
Popped the bonnet and cable and bulkhead looked ok so checked the pedal end.
Aaaaarrrrgggghhhhh. The cable had literally ripped the surrounding metal open and pulled through also snapping the small rectangle eyelet on the inner cable.
I know the clutches are heavy on these cars but never thought it could make this much of a mess.
Have had to leave the car parked up in a car park overnight which i really wasnt happy about but will be going to get it towed back today.
I will post a picture later but was wondering if i am the only one this has happened to and if not how did the repair go? ( is there a repair panel for this end )
Thanks all

If the stick on repair plate has also pulled through/cracked the bulk head then I'm sorry to say it's a bigger task to fix as you will need an even bigger repair plate made and the bulk head strengthen, at least inlet manifold removed and carpets etc if you get it welded in place or easier to bolt some thing in.
The other option is a later South African Mk1 golf clutch cable linkage kit, VW did make a different design for the later cars which was a bracket fitted to the bulk head and that is where the cable would pull from not the bulk head.
Only picture I can find and on google link as it's from Photobucket, (1982 mk2 build - Scirocco Register)
You can just about see the bracket which fixes to the bulkhead?
