So today in the rain my golf decided to break down, well it all started a few weeks ago when i realised my clutch pedal was lower than usual so I thought it could be a stretched cable or something so carried on the in the traffic as I dropped my clutch boom the pedal as gone not to come back …. so I pull over open the bonnet realised the bulk head has rusted through and cable pulled in ….. so no wanting to wait for MR AA I had some sheet aluminium and tools so I doubled the metal and put a split in the middle which allowed the cable to pass through but not letting it get through the rusted hole so , after my lovely repair I drove the 10 miles home …. now i know you can buy repair patches but was wondering would these need the old metal cutting out and the new one replaced also how would this be possible as the space is limited, the car is my daily so need it for work so would it be possible to do a quick repair like making a rectangle sheet metal and riveting it to the bulk head and then cutting a small hole for tbe cable to pass till I get time to get a repair panel and a Welder, all help appriciated in advance thanks

Clutch cable hole In the bulk head ?

I have seen these on eBay but don't know if this is viable being adhesive. Might be worth a try as a longer term temporary measure perhaps??

The patch repairs work.. the bond glue is good enough for few years. But it's possible to tack weld in place if you're competent with welder. Check is only coated with galv and not fully aluminium.

Remove clutch cable from pedal and feed it into the engine bay, get the repair plate and stick the plate on as it has double sided tape on the back, feed the clutch cable through into the car and re attach to pedal, press the pedal down a couple of times to make sure its ok and job done.
You will be ok if the hole you made is not to big, if it is you need to get it repaired/ welded properly, inlet / exhaust manifold needs to come off to make room and carpet etc out from inside.
I know it's now a little to late for you but If anyone else is reading this and does not have a plate fitted even though the bulk head looks ok… FIT ONE NOW! it's just a matter of time before the original bulk head gives way as it's just a rubbish design by VW.
£20 plate now will save alot of time and effort later on.

Thanks guys will get a plate and use some polyurethane sealant adhesive leaving it 48 hours before using it, would it be best to attach the cable to the pedal when I stick the panel on or best to leave and let the adhesive set before reattaching the cable ?

I would attach the cable and over tighten the adjuster on the gearbox end so it clamps it in place

Just stick it on and press the clutch pedal. There's enough pressure in the clutch diaphragm to move 3/4 ton of car at 110mph so I think that will stick it firm.
If you are that concerned drill a couple of pilot holes and stick some self tappers in.
