Clutch cable and clutch pedal photos needed.

Hi all,

Would someone kindly post some photos of the correct routing for the clutch cable (91 Sportline), the rubber clutch pedal bump stop and the metal bracket that it sits on.  I have been trying to fit a new clutch cable after fitting a bulk head repair plate but the cable seems to be pointing to high in the foot well and the rubber grommet that fits against the bulkhead seems to want to force the cable down in the engine bay (below the intake manifold), I know this is not right as the cable is supposed to go over the engine.  On looking at the bracket for the pedals I noticed that the stop looked wrong, on looking on here someone mentioned that his was bent and had to be bent back, I just need to know what its meant to look like also what the rubber stop looks like. One last thing, what is the correct length clutch cable? the one I have is 1450mm. Any help and advice, especially photos would be a massive help.

with the pedal stop there should be a plastic clip on top of it, on mine the part it clips to was bent out of shape. this took some figuring out as I had no reference to work from just a clip i had pinched from the scrappy without checking the pedal box as i assumed that was all it needed

if the clutch and brake pedals are level at rest then your clutch stop is probably fine

I managed to find a photo of the part on ebay, you are right about it having to be straight. It looks like I am going to have to remove the peddle mount and steering column.  I also found the little rubber bump stop on VW heritage. It seems the little metal plate the rubber sits on is bent and twisted, not easy to see or to sort out wile on the car.  I might even try welding a reinforcement bracket on the back to stop it happening again.  In regards to the photos of the bulkhead repair, there is no way I am posting a photo of that on here for fear of getting slated as it is only a  field repair to test the clutch and the idea (lol).  I am going to pull the engine out to get better access and do it properly. It looks like most of those guys removed the wedged shaped rubber grommet from the clutch cable, I might give that a go and make a metal sleeve for the cable to feed through in the correct direction over the top of the engine.  As soon as I get it sorted, I will let you know how I got on. Thanks again.

I've used a diesel clutch cable on my mk1's as it routes to the back of the inlet manifold and avoids the flapping around and rubbing the bonnet. Just a thought.

Shughy, Do you have any problems with the cable pinching?

No Andy fits well and IMO looks a little better.

This I think is the VW part number 172721335J - Classic and Heritage stock it.

No the correct one should come out over the cam and rocker cover and then head for the gearbox.

I just prefer this route. On my sportline the cable used to rub the underside of the bonnet due to the overhang and length of the cable.

That's interesting, certainly different from how mine was, it was routed in front of the air box breather pipe, has caused me problems but that routing looks much better, thank you!

another top tip is bag yourself a mk2 golf clutch cable steady arm, it bolts to the gearbox and holds the cable exactly vertical over the clutch actuating lever. this stops the cable trying to hacksaw its way sideways thru the cable hole on the box!

there are 2 types manual cable and auto cable, both are quite tricky to find but its the manual one you want. the auto cable still fits but the hole is too big, so you need to cable tie it or something to keep the cable in place. heres one on my mk1 cab 16v:
