To repaint the chrome strip on the bottom edge of the tailgate.
Has anyone used and can recommend a chrome effect paint?
I want to have a go at painting the adhesive chrome strip that runs along the bottom edge of the rear hatch/tailgate which has deteriorated.
I think if I try to replace the strip which has been there for 40 years, I might open a can of worms when I try to peel it off.
Thanks

It depends on the sheen you want and you can always go over with HI-Gloss Clear.
You could also use chrome Mylar tape as i wrap the thing.
Or Gold or Silver leaf them. I did all my badges in Gold leaf.

It doesn’t need to be perfect, cos the car isn’t.
It just needs to look like the chrome trim you get in the rubber window seals.
Does Duplicolor do a chrome paint. If so, has anyone tried it?
Thanks again

Well if you take your trim out of the rubber seal, and paint it, it may crack going back in..
The Silver leaf will do good, but paining that mastic on it you have to be careful about going out of the lines.
The Chrome and gold paint that I have used i the past has to be shalen about every 30 seconds while spraying as it will go wonky on you.
Since that is basically Plastic trim you may want to try a Chrome based model paint
This is what I have used, it isn't a true chrome look, but pretty close.
Dupli-Color CS101 Metallic Chrome High Gloss Automotive Paint - John Woolfe Racing
Mask it well as you want to have about 2 feet of paper on each side to make sure there isn't any over spray.
The good blue masking tape and a Exacto knife is going to be your friend.
When I wanted to repaint and clear the under side of my hood. I used cheap Dollar store plastic tarps. and I didn't want any over spray.
I have even used old Christmas Wrapping paper to mask.

It's actually the chrome strip that runs along the bottom edge of the tailgate (which I don’t think you have on a cabrio) that I want to paint not the chrome trim in the glass seal.
I just want the hatch strip to more or less match the chrome in the glass seal.
I’ll try the Duplicolor Chrome you recommend but was hoping someone could recommend a brush on option, as I also want to have a go at the chrome piping on the plastic bumpers, which won’t be easy to mask off and spray.

It looked great till it got wet, then was all milky.
So ok on Christmas tree decorations or pine cones.
Probably best to use quality silver paint, fine flat 1200 and lacquer.
Or some kind of wrap.
