Help

I have seen some posts in here about changing the ignition switch but am struggling to remove the barrel assembly. I have removed the steering wheel, screws for the stalks inc wiring, removed the bolt and now I believe it should slide out. I understand it might be a little hard to just pull out but I soaked it in wd40 since Sunday and tried tonight with a variety of tools including a decent puller borrowed from a mechanic friend

It's just not moving. Am I missing something?

Any help would be great…

I am considering removing to column but two of the bolts are tamper proof ones so that presents another problem….

Am I right in thinking the collar that the steering wheel fits in to and the black plastic sleeve slides off or is it just the ally casing?

Only used to tintops, on which this is quite easy, but I don't think that's one you have there. So has it got one of those s/wheel different size spline adaptors, if so I would imagine this would be tight and be your issue.

Silly question, have you undone it at the UJ end?

It won't pull out otherwise.

Also make sure the steering lock is off.

Try giving it a gentle tap with a hammer down a bit, then try a lever at the bottom to push it back up. Nut back on the thread at the top (steering wheel holder oner erer) and then some mole grips and a gentle tap tap or a puller.

Seem to remember mine coming out quite easy.

Was your steering wheel locked?
If so unlock it and take the  tension off the shaft.
If your steering wheel lock is locked then you can't get the bearing holder /ignition switch holder off the shaft because the blade of the steering wheel lock is engaged..

Going back you will want to use a lever and a fulcrum on the u-joint at the bottom to hold the inner shaft up.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Thanks for the responses. I am not removing the column though so don't think I need to remove the UJ end.

Steering lock is off key is in the barrel and it turns freely. Just won't budge.

It's a cabriolet if that helps. I think the spline at the top is pressed on so going to try applying some heat tonight to see if that helps…. wish me luck!

Well it's all done. A mate popped round with a better puller and it all came apart really easy. Just goes to show the value of the right tools. One working cabby, one happy chappy!
