CAR WONT START

Hi peeps,
i recently changed what i thought was the relay for the heater blower, but, the only reason it wasnt working was the earth wire wasnt connected, so i connected it and the blower works perfect. My problem now is the car turns over but wont fire, i hear a clicking noise from the relays when i turn key, should i check relay to see if i have put it in right way round? or change the one that is making clicking noise?

Thanks.

You can't put relays in the wrong way round.
Sounds like it could be a voltage drop causing a relay to drop in and out not the relay itself. Could be something pulling too many amps during cranking or excessive resistance in wires.

Was the car itself running ok before you started messing this the electrics?

Did you put the old relay back and then try to start it?

Won't start is a vague condition.
Won't Crank over?
Will Crank over but not fire?

Check all the connectors around where you were working chances are you knocked something loose.  Wouldn't be the first case of self-inflicted difficulty.

Won't crank, look at your Frame to Engine grounds and your Batter to frame grounds.

Verify that your starter solenoid is engaging….
You can place the car in Neutral, Parking brake set.
Turn the Keys to the first click, then Jumper the starter solenoid to Positive battery, of the engine spins, then you are looking at a bad ignition switch or feed wire from it to the starter.

If the starter doesn't spin, take a Battery jumper from the Negative Post and Clip it to the engine.  If the engine turns over when you jump the solenoid wire.  Bad Ground, if it doesn't then bad starter solenoid or bad starter.

Remove the fuel pump relay then take out the relay below it and turn it around 180 degrees and stick it where the fuel pump relay fits, this should make the fuel pump run as soon as you turn on the ignition, then try and start the car.
If the car starts the fuel pump relay is dead and you need to fix or replace the fuel pump relay.

Buy another and throw it in the boot or glove box, they tend to go bad at the oddest times ie: middle of a rain store.  Running late for a wedding… :)

I used to carry a bit of thick wire in my glove box just in case, I did use it once when on the way home from work the car just stopped, took the relay out then bridged the wire across the 2 bigger connectors and the fuel pump runs but it runs all the time even with the keys removed, it got me home.
I've now got a spare as when I put my old relay back in it worked fine and has for the last 2 years….. very strange…..

rather than a loop of wire use a 17/18/100 relay if you need to bypass the fuel relay in an emergency, or for testing purposes :)

aye the 53 relay does fit and work but I prefer not to use them though as the terminals are too small so wont make good contact. the 17/18/100 relays uses the correct large size terminals for the permanent live input and power output to the pumps :)
