Car cutting out under acceleration

Post

my 88golf Mark 1clipper has been losing power under acceleration. Had it in to my mechanic who has not been able to sort it. Any thoughts please? Mightthese be symptoms of a rusty tank? Any other likely causes. Bear with me..I’m not a handy guy with a spanner but any advice really welcome

It could be fuel, air, timing or spark.

What did your mechanic do?

It could be rust in the fuel tank blocking the flow of fuel.

It could the fuel pump is on it's way out and might not be able to pump enough fuel at higher rpm's to give the engine the fuel it needs under load.

Could be the timing needs adjusting as the spark is being given at the wrong time.

Could be a lack of air.

Have a look at the air filter and fuel filters first. Easy to check and cheap to replace. I'm assuming it's a carb model.

Check the dizzy and the rotor arm for damage and wear as these may need replacing.

Check the spark plugs too. Check the colour of the ends to see if it's running rich or lean.

Report back with your findings and we might be a ble to advise a bit more.

thanks ian–we replace fuel pump–he thought there was an electrical problem and stripped too the carb–then noticed air bubbles in a feeder pipe–don't ask me which one ill call him tomoz. he cleaned out the filler pipe into the tankl–it worked brill first day–10 miles journey then I noticed some backfire as I went to garage the car at night. Saturday I drove 15 miles or so then lost power turning right at a junction as you do. on the way back after a walk wound town those power loss surges were back as ever

Hey. I had some issues similar to this and running 98/99 instead of 95 fixed it... Worth a shout perhaps.

chatted with my mechanic--hed checked all the air and fuel issues. did a sof the tank which sorted matters for a time but the problem recurred after a short time . he is suggesting the tank filter is blocking so tank needs a complete clean out or maybe if rust is there a replacement tank .
