Because hydraulic heads have 4 caps, and shimmable 5.
What I have seen done in the past, is that they went to the breakers and found a head.. then took their broken one to a machinist to have them match the broken cap from all the others, then line bore and over sized bearings.. Granted it wasn't a VW but it is one possibility, and I think he did spend about 300 1980 dollars….
I suspect it all depends on which head you have and the condition of your current head minus the broken cap.
Getting a used one and having it built up with your base parts would be doable if the used cams good.
What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.

It's a little late now but you are meant to undo and do up the cap nuts in a certain order and best a little bit a time, or did you do that and it still snapped?
I would try and find a second hand cap and try that?
just read a bit more info and fitting a 2nd hand cap may or may not work???

It was all tightened in order. The cover was on and I heard the crack. Opened back up and there it was.mark1gls said
You must have a later car with hydraulic tappets then?

If I were to get a second hand cap and just replace. Should that be ok or would I need to get it all remachined. Thanks for help so far
