Cabriolet leak

Post

Hi, I own a GTi cabriolet built 87 and would appreciate any advice you may have.
I noticed the other day my brake lights were stuck on, then saw that my brake pedal was wet and so was the carpet in both the driver and passenger foot well. I'm unsure where the leak may be coming from; could it possibly be the bulkhead? It doesn't appear to be coming from the roof, but I won't rule it out. It was odd that nothing else was wet apart from just the brake pedal and front carpet.

Thanks in advance.

Check the 2 drainage holes are clear in the scuttle area, they can get blocked up with leaves.

Is the leak rain water as the heater matrix can leak which makes the carpets wet.

If the carpets are really wet you could do with taking the carpets and sound proofing out and drying everything out as it will get smelly and you don't want to rust the floor out.

Hey, thanks. So I've cleaned out the scuttle area, are the two drain holes the ones with the rubber grommets with like 4 points on them? Also, good call about the heater matrix..I shall have a look at that! I think I'm gonna pull up the carpets just to see how bad it might be anyways..but it's not been soaking…just damp.
Thank you ever so much.

Yes that's the drain holes, there is plenty of guides etc on leaks but a lot of leaks can happen from the cabriolet roof near the handles to open the roof, have a look there as well or place a plastic tub on the seats below the handles to see if any water gets in there, a lunch box works well as mine leaked before I changed the roof.

Door membranes is another thing to check/look at as there should be a plastic sheet behind the door cards to stop any water getting into the car as the doors are designed to let water through and out the drainages holes at the bottom of the doors.

Hey, I honestly think it's the heater matrix now you've said it. Suppose having a good look at the doors wouldn't hurt. I've seen it before were someone's used filler along the drain holes..bit of a mess.

I appreciate you getting back to me. Thanks.

If there is rust about the Windscreen metal, You may want to lift the edges of the seals corners are a known weak spot.

If you are consistently low on a/f in the expansion jug, then the Matrix is suspect, even when shut off it gets pressurized and there is a little trickle of a/f through it.
If the a/f is normal at all times it isn't the matrix but it could be a bad hose or loose hose clamp.

If you don't have a Rain Divertor over the rain tray, then water can have free access to all the holes screws and what ever.

On the doors there are 2 main drains.  One is a rubber plug that is in the middle of the door Cabin side, and if that is missing and you have bad outer scrapers all water is directed from the windows into the door and the floor of your cabin.

There are 2 pucker drains on the corners of the door skin (1 each door) at the rear edge of the rear of the door, if those are plugged with debris water can build up and dribble in to your cabin via the fresh air vents and also when you close the doors briskly.

Not to many top leaks effect the floors in the front, usually the boot or rear seats/floor.

In the archive section how-to's I have a list of things about where is the water coming from.

Or click on the link in my signature there are pictures of all I speak of there.

Hey, thanks. Windscreen appears ok but I'll check that too. I'll double check everything and have a look at your link.
I appreciate it.

Thanks.

Heater matrix going you’ll see the coolant disappear from the expansion tank under the bonnet.

If you decide on a new roof give me a call.
