Good Morning All.
Something strange happening today.
Needing to move the car due to moving house and last year I struggled through a Fuel Tank replacement, + rear disc conversion with new ATE Master Cylinder & Servo + Mk4 rear calipers.
This morning I went to put some fuel in it so I can make the 20 minute drive to the new home. Pulled of the drive no issues, just a slight bind on rears, assume from being sat for 6 months. After the 3 mile round trip to the petrol station and back the car was struggling to drive and when parked on the drive brakes were about 70% stuck on. The car would move but reluctantly.
As I walked round the back with no key in the car I see the brake lights stuck on….. What would cause the system to remain pressurised ?????
The inline pressure regulators that are located near the Servo are still in place and also the compensator on the rear beam.
To overcome it for moving to the new house I have slacked and re-tightened a nipple on the MC just to relieve the pressure. Fingers crossed it will be ok for the short journey.

When you say in-line pressure regulators, what do you mean? On a stock GTI (83 at any rate) the compensator reglates the pressure to the rears, and the in-line things up front are residual pressure valves - these maintain a level of pressure to the rear drums. If you have the stock ones of these in place and you are running rear discs, that would likely explain the binding issue. If you take it for a short drive, you should be able to work out if it is the front or rears that are binding, just by putting your hand near (not on!) the disc. residual pressure valves are 10psi for drums, and 2psi for discs, although from what I've read in the past, you probably don't need the residual pressure valves at all once you've done a rear disc conversion…..

Yes think it just the rear binding. They were a bit warm.
Think it will remove and see if that works but panic over right now as the f-ing thing wont start. Hoping it is just a electrical gremlin.
Need to get this thing sorted r sold this summer i think. Just a constant head ache to niggles that prevent enjoyment. Cheaper to hire a car for the 500 miles a year i do in it. Grrrrr
Thank you.

The joys of a classic. Thought I'd got mine all sorted - got it though it's MOT late last year, put a couple of hundred miles on it, and now the electrical gremlins have crept in! Frustration now is having the time to solve the issues!
Still - I wouldn't sell it!

Thanks I will but because it appears to be isolated to rears then i thinking sustaining valves. Need to get 2 psi versions from some where or bypass them all together.
By the way running again. Dodgy hall sensor connection on the dizzy.
Maybe time for a electronic ignition upgrade. Seen a french company call 123 which might be a good fit.
Anyway back to brakes I am hopeful they will be cooperative for a short journey.

I bought the 10psi version of these (I'm still on drums and I lost the orginal ones during my resto - then found them a week after purchase
).

I'm pretty sure that the ignition on the GTI is already considered to be electronic (as opposed to having points which would make it mechanical).
