Hey Chaps,
I'm building a 2E engine and I need to swap the distributor drive gear from from the 2E onto the DX distributor.
Having already given the pin a pretty good smack with a hammer and punch and it's not budged at all, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks to get it to move?
Cheers, Si.

I had trouble with this and asked a tuning firm the same question, the reply was "hit it harder, it'lll go". I did mansge to do it but wasn't really happy about bashing it so hard, to me pressing it out would be a better way, possibly take it to an engineering workshop.

Glad to hear it. sort of…
I have hit this so hard that I think I need a better quality punch to hit it any harder. My brother has a hydraulic press I can use, but I'll need a better punch.
So once I them both off, one way or another, can I reuse the pin? If not, does the replacement pin need to be quite so stout?

IIRC one of mine had a roll pin, and you had to use a roll pin punch has a dimple on it so you don't swedge it out binding it more…..
Stout, it does control the timing and if it shears….

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.

I've still got the old pinion here and if it's any help the hole is 4mm, or a 4mm drill fits fairly snug but a 4.5mm won't go, so you need a 4mm punch.

Wow. … those suckers really are in there good.
I ended up drilling. 3.5mm hole through one, then still couldn't punch the remainder out. Tried a 4mm drill. Snapped the drill. Had a beer & paced the garage swearing and went inside …

I think what you need is a short 4mm punch and something really solid to rest the pinion on, plus an extra pair of hands to hold it steady. I seem to remember using a 2lb hammer and getting tio the point where I was thinking sod it, if it breaks it breaks. Once it moves and you have the hollow to locate the punch you're there.

Well, I can honestly say that job took a wee bit longer than I had anticipated.
I finally drilled them both out, got the gears off and swapped over and used a spring steel roll pin and some Loctite (not that it looks like going anywhere) and just as I was patting myself on the back, and waiting for the Loctite to dry I noticed that the TSR spacer ring for the distributor does not fit over the drive gear.
Also swapped to Vaccum Advance to an early twin port jobby that has advance/retard.
