Alternator dize

Post

Good afternoon all. Can anyone advise on the size of alternator belt needed for my 1990 gti cabby. The garage has put on a 950 x 10 and it seems to be chafing somewhere as there is rubber swarf being thrown over the slam panel.

Cheers

with or without air, and engine size.

Personally I would take it right back and tell them to FIX IT correctly, you paid them, and it isn't right.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

950 x 10 is the right size, check to see it's set at the right tension, there should be about 10mm deflection 1/2 way along the longest length (guide in the Haynes manual) also check if any of the pulleys are coming lose ?

Don't think any UK supplied MK1 had factory AC, did any european MK1 have AC? A tiny number may have had 3rd party AC added and perhaps 1 or 2 of those still exist.

No UK RHD had factory power steering.

No european MK1 would have had a catalyst until the very last few didgpants 1993 cabrios.

All UK GTIs were big block engined.

The 1970s/80s UK importers kept the model range and variants avilable very limited compared to the rest of europe (and world?) were if you wanted a 5 door, auto GTI in flat brown with bright red vinyl interior they would sell you one.

Briano1234 is in America, I think they had Air con and power steering as standard especially in the later cars?

indeed he is but this is a predominantly UK forum and 99% of queries are for RHD UK spec cars so little need to ask about AC and PAS and engine size as 99% won't have AC or PAS and it is accepted GTI will be big block.

The fact that no one ever feels the need to state their car is none AC and doesn't have PAS etc so sort confirms that no one expects them to be so equiped.

Yes I am on the left side of the pond.  Every Cabriolet I see over here is Digifant (all 90's that is) or CIS then there are the pre-84.5 and post 84.5 to contend with.  Every 90 that I have owned also had Cat's, Power steering, and AIR BAGS, and electric windows along with A/C which is nice on those 98 degree days (F) with 135 at least on the pavement.  Oh and unlike the early Water Stabilized Oil Coolers that the pre-90's used, I installed an external oil cooler that sat in front of my Condenser, and well my engine oil temp never exceeded 115.  When I would tool down the highway @ 80 mph in my Auto Cabbies they would go critically hot in the summer.
After adding my oil cooler It was so enjoyable… 80mph Air on, and it was 95 out… temp never exceeded 110.
Before it would almost peg.  Figured it was the Auto as my manual tranny never did that.
