So I got myself a project car.
It's a '79 5 door Golf GLS. While I would have prefered a poverty spec 3 door of the same year I need to be realistic and the chrome trim suits the body colour and extra doors.
My Plans.
Body; fully restored in original Diamond Silver, no major mods other than chrome (maybe stainless) bumpers and arches rolled for clearance, no plastic arch trims. Maybe a little extra shiny parts.
Wheels; G60 steels 195/45r15 tyres, dressed up with chrome mk1 caps.
Suspension; Polybushes all round. The car has coilovers already fitted, but I'm thinking of weighing the completed car and calculating the spring rates and length for the weight of the car and wheel travel. Possibly needed for a heavy drivetrain.
Engine & Box; 130PD from a mk4 GT TDI and 6 speed 02M box. Conversion mounts are available and I'm aware of using a KR cambelt tensioner. Are the off-the-peg mk1 shafts with 100mm CVs the right length?
Brakes; Meriva calipers up front on g60 discs, mk4 golf rear calipers on 6n2 Polo GTI discs.
I'm thinking of using a bias pedal box under the dash and relocating the battery to the boot to smooth the engine bay.
The main things I'm unsure about are the driveshafts and the fuel pump*.
Is there anything I'm missing?
Please school me! *I'm thinking using the original sender for the fuel guage and doing something with a mk4 in tank pump off to the side.
Possibly cutting a hole and bolting a section of mk4 tank in the hole.

Sounds a nice build

I can't help much I'm afraid, I'm no conversion expert!
Plenty of people I'm sure can help - Si for one 36thcrazyfist as he's planning similar for his Cabby.
Only thing for me - and it's only personal opinion/taste - is full polybush and coilies I'm guessing may equal a very firm ride?
Good luck with the build - keep us updated with plenty of pics

I'm of the opinion that out of the box coilovers are so stiffly sprung because that's what we've came to expect.Hairyarse said

Maybe because traditionally they're used in motorsport? Though any racer would be weighing the car and swapping the springs out for correct rate and length to handle best possible.
So, I'm planning on running the softest spring I can get away with given the ride height and heavy engine/box combo, it will probably be pretty stiff though.
