Any views on fitting new aftermarket CV joints as opposed to trying to refurb originals?
Im guessing the ones on my tin top will be from original (ive owned it for 30years and never changed them 170k miles), they've had new boots and grease over the years but no more than that. Ive noticed a bit of noise that could be associated with the near side shaft so need to make a decision .
Any comments greatly appreciated, brands good and bad , places that can refurb , costs etc.
many thanks

Only buy new, or if you have a local re-builder take them to him.US, and for 50 bucks per side he rebuilt mine.
On my 81 Diesel I had the same shafts for over 330K.
Yeah they were noisy, on slo speed turns, but never gave me any other issue.
The only thing to know is are yours 90 or 100mm. Ti a string around one of the CV mounts at the Transmission mark the string and measure it.
With the quality of the joints on rebuilds, I would only trust new.
If you decide to change the Hubs and wheel bearings make sure that you re-use your C-clips new ones have been known to be round-eared, and not flat. That causes the wheel bearing to bind when tightening them up and your shafts won't turn.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

Thanks Briano, I'm leaning towards new, not a huge difference in cost by the time labour is added per end/side.
Pretty sure Im on 90mm (tin top 83 GTI) will get the callipers out and double check though.
thanks again

83 gti should be 90mm mate. Do some research on the right outers as I've read posts from folk with 81-83 cars having binding issues due to the shape of the outer joint. I think some parts are sold as suitable for early cars when they aren't. Solution is by the right part or be prepared to grind a bit off.

Should be an 'add topic' button at the bottom of the list of topics (if you are logged in).

I've got a bit of play in the splines, like you I've stripped them down and greased them over the years, no noise but a little vibration, when I get around to doing it I'll splash out and fit the above.
