3 temp sensors?

Post

For whatever reason my cooling (again) (again)

Heya, ive googled too long to admit without a seemingly correct answer.

on my 1987 vw golf gli floptop i have what seems to be 3 temperature sensors in the water flange :

a spade connector on with a yellow/red wire

a connector type with a green/white and red/black wire

and the bottom one which seems to be brown/white and red/black conecctor type.

are all 3 of these necessary on the car?

they all go into the same wire sleeve into the firewall and presumably behind the center console/dash

and since were asking questions (terribly sorry) what is a normal position for the temp gauge on the cluster unit to be at? mine goes just over the light or slightly to the right of it.

many many thanks in advance!

1. Spade connector with the yellow red wire is for the temperature gauge needle.

2. The brown connector with the green/white and red/black wire is for the thermo time switch, if sensors the coolant temperature and tells the 5th injector if it needs to add extra fuel when starting the car.

3. No idea as I don't have a 3rd sensor underneath on a 1988 GTi UK car.

Normally the temperature gauge reads 1/2 way (in line with the red light) when driving and when stationary it creeps up to 3/4 then the fan kicks in then back the 1/2 way.

Your spade connection looks a little dirty try removing the spade connector and give the sensor a clean with a wire brush, go carefully with the spade connector as it's easy to pull the wire off.

I will surely Clean the connector later! Thanks!

I also suspect the third meter to be a loose wire under my Dash but havent checked yet
