2 helps please! Mk3 golf wiper motor conversion and cigarette lighter

Post

Hi all,

Had a couple issues today, could use some help!

Firstly, I'm trying to do the mk3 wiper motor upgrade (following this link: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3465098).
However, I got the the stage of removing the backplate from my mk1 motor (I have the SWG one) and the same from the mk3 motor and I suddnely went…oh….that doesn't look right. They seem to be facing different ways, did I accidentally buy a mk3 motor from a left hand drive? The mk3 motor had no backplate, only the plastic clipped one…meaning I couldn't attach the mk1 backplate to it!So what's the part numer for the mk3 motor I "actually" need?! Thank you! Secondly, my cigarette lighter never worked so I thought I would have a look…obviously doesn't work because someone took the connector off and threw it away apparently!Anyone know the part number for the female connect for my cigarette lighter? Thanks!

Can't help you with the wiper motor.

Ciggie lighter I would look behind the knee-bar, or the Console for the connector as it is probably there somewhere.
That is a 20am fused circuit IIRC.
You can use insulated Amp connectors and wire it up One fused for the power, one for the Ground and one for the light, but it looks like your light is missing.

My lighter stopped working after my kids plugged their I-phone jacks in it and well Sprung the center.
So I bought a whole kit from a parts store and ended up cutting in new wires and Insulated terminal spads.

Works really good now :).

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Thanks,

I've had a look but can't find the connector. There is an aftermarket stereo in there and it looks like the connector has been chopped off and those wires used for the stereo :S I'd quite like to get the OEM connector back on there…wondering if there is somewhere I can buy this, but I would need to wire in a 20A fuse to the +12v line anyway?

I'm gonna have a look around for wiper motors today too, see what I can find - but any help is much appreciated!!

I recently got a MK3 motor and like yourself discovered it had a plastic clip on cover and thus was unable to swap over the backplate.

I then tried to put the complete gearbox section from the MK1 onto the MK3 motor, but no joy there either, slightly different diameters.

So I just skipped all the messing about, bolted the MK3 motor in as is, and made up a short loom section to connect it to the original connector, IIRC I used 2.8mm males at the motor end and 4.6mm male connectors at the other. Used the Haynes manual and online standard din wiring charts to figure out the connections.
All works fine and is an amazing transformation coming from the original sloooooooowwwww motor :P.

Sorry the cars not here at the moment so can't take any pics etc to help.

Maybe I'll end up going your way about it morr…did you have the same problem I did with the motors being differently "handed"?

I can't honestly recall, although I do remember it sat at a different angle when installed, presumably this may have been caused by the "handing" difference…..

yeah, could have done. So you ended up not having it bolted to the support? (I mean, the mk1 motor backplate has that single M6 bolt to the scuttle, mk3 motor doens't have that)

Yep, no support bar, similar to how peeps normally change to the MK2 motor. No problems so far although I do intend to make a support when I get time as it certainly can't hurt and will reduce the stress on the spindle locations particularly in light of the extra weight of the newer motor.
To make the wiring easier you can always cut the plug off the original motor and graft it onto the MK3 motor, makes it easier for any subsequent removals compared to the individual pins I'm currently using. I intend doing that as soon as I get hold of the portion of the Mk3 loom that connects to the motor to make a better more easily removable configuration.

Thanks mate. I'd appreciate some pictures if you had time at some point, that would be really helpful.

Wiring shouldn't be too bad, I mean red and green connect to red and green anyway. The brown wire in an earth and then there's two more that do something, just don't know what yet :P

I changed my wiper motor on my Mk1 Scirocco and had to move the fixing holes by drilling new ones and I got a bit of the wiper loom from a Mk3 golf and fitted spade connectors on the ends so I could plug it straight into my original plug.

May be slight different to a Mk1 golf as I've only 1 wiper on my Scirocco.
 Old motor on the right.

It was still very close.

Hey,

I actually do not know, mine was removed already when I picked up my car…so I'm actually trying to figure out how to lock it back into place lol Believe if you google mk1 cigarette lighter removal there are some guides.

Here for example: http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=electrics_2%2Fcigarette-lighter_10

Seems you slide a screwdriver in either side of the tray and gently wiggle it out

Thanks, seems like all the mk3 motors are "handed" differently…so that's not something I've messed up, which is good.

Seems though that I'm basically going to have to go down the line of buying a mk3 motor and just fudging the wiring.

Anyone got a wiring diagram of how to wire up the 5 wires on the mk1 motor connector (SWG variant) to the mk3 motor?

Just FYI all, I have found the part number for the exact mk3 motor you need to do the "easy" swap…sadly the only ones I can find for sale are in the USA and are around £45…eek

A few pics to show how mine fitted, IIRC when you look closely at the plugs on the motors you can see the DIN wiring numbers which will help you figure out the loom

For the sake of science I have taken the plunge and ordered one of the mk3 USA spec cabrio motors from eBay to try and do the conversion as on vwvortex. I'm in a "do it once, do it right" mindset.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Front-Windshield-Wiper-Motor-93-99-VW-Jetta-Golf-GTI-Cabrio-Mk3-1HM-955-023-C-/311373473997

I'll post up some pictures when I'm doing it to see how it goes. I reckon I'll need to jimmy the fixing point somehow because the motors are still "handed" differently, but I'm hoping to be able to utilize the mounting point in the end.

just bolt the mk2/3 motor straight on, no need to mess swapping bits about or worry about the 'handyness' in a mk1 as there is stacks of room around it. for the wierign you simply chop a length of loom off a donor and match the colours to the mk1 plug. either splice the wires or crimp male spades on and pop them to the plug.

can get complete conversion kits here:
http://www.classic-vw.co.uk/

early mk4 golf also use the same motor as the mk3. late wont work as they have a missing pin. (note early mk4 looms also have a missing pin, so ideally find a mk2/3 donor to cut the plug from, else you have to add a wire to the mk4 plug!)

with the ciggy lighter follow the loom back, it should run to a 3 pin spade plug. you can just get an unbutchered loom from a donor loom and swap it over. or if its been cut before then you can repair easy enough if you can get a donor section as they used standard latched spade connectors in the plug housing.

Just a heads up for anyone who cares / wants to do this themselves at some point. Changing the mk3 motor to a USA mk3 cabrio (1HM 955 023 C) does work from a mk1 SWG motor.

Just got it up and running in mk 1983 3 door. The backplate of the mk1 motor does require modification to get it to fit the mk3 motor (holes drilling out bigger, extra holes drilled, edges taken back for clearance etc) but it did fit :)
