1.5 JB OVERHEATING

Post

My little 1.5 gl is overheating

Hi all, just a few obvious things I should point out. I'm running all stock parts including radiator, water pump etc

This all started a couple of days ago when I got a pretty severe leak from a slit in a hose from my water pump to a metal pipe, that's what vwheritage call it anyway I'm not too sure where it goes (to the block I suspect) anyway I lost all coolant and my car overheated covering my whole engine bay in coolant which is very rusty and concerned me!

I did some research on top of that and found out the previous owner had put pink g12 coolant in the thing, which isn't as anticorrosive as g11 which the car would have come with, so I thought I'd use some of that after completely flushing the system!

Fast forward today after flushing the system with water completely until nothing but clear water ran from the lower hose at the bottom of my radiator and the hole in my water pump.

However after putting the g11 coolant in and fitting this new hose, my little golfie is running hotter than she should be while smelling the engine getting hot, then flying back down to normal running temp within a few minutes, what a nightmare

Sorry for the essay haha, any ideas or help I'd really appreciate as I need my car for work, I know it's a not an ideal situation the car was running beautifully before all of this nonsense!

Thanks all  IMG_4060.png

I would suggest replacing the hoses that are ballooned.

Replace the t-stat but drill a hole in the lip 1/8 of an inch prevents the air bubble I would also suggest that you flush and back flush the radiator and the heater core.

You could have a bad water pump, and if you are unsure of the age or Kilos on it you may want to change it as well.  I would buy it as an assembly because you may break a bolt on the thing do to corrosion.  I have gotten old corroded bolts out bu using a 50/50 mix of ATF to Acetone.  Dribble it on all the bolts let it work for a day then dribble more on them and use a impact tool Electric worked for me to remove the bolts.  If they are still original I would not suggest using a wrench on the hex bolts as they do snap.

Clean you bolts and cover with Copper never-seize to make them easier the next time, followed by spraying then with battery corrosion preventive paint.

How I do it on my cabriolet.

I know about corroded bolts and wrenches.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Thanks for the fast reply Briano, I've replaced the two hoses in the photo, I'm going to start on the thermo and see if that makes any difference! I've read your thread and as for the slight raise in temperature after fitting a new water pump, is that all normal? Once again thank you for your help Briano!

Update: I've done some testing and found out that my radiator fan isn't turning on whatsoever  I'm going to put the two switch wires together today too see weather my fan is busted or it's just the switch, I feel silly knowing it wasn't the first thing that I checked haha
