Hi mate. I feel your pain. I was told the head gasket had gone on my Golf by a garage. Took the car home and and found a water leak on the coolant pipe that goes into the side of the engine. This was confirmed by Jellybelly when he popped over later that week. The part cost £12 to fix. I know im new to this site, but with all the people on here im sure you can get the problems resolved with out using a garage. I wish I could help you pal but my knowlegde is very slim as im still figuring out my own car. If i can do anything to help. let me know!
Keep smiling mate, and dont let the bas****s grind you down!

I've lost count of the number of people who have come on here, had work done on their Mk1 Golf, usually at great cost, then its either not fixed the problem or others have immediately appeared.
WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE REPAIR GARAGE INDUSTRY?!?!?!?!?!?
The Mk1 Golf must be fairly simple and easy to work on compared to many other cars, are they employing monkeys these days or has the training gone down the pan, or what?

PS forgot to mention, its not just you, loads of people have problems with garages.
Seriously though, you should keep an accurate record of how much you spend on the car. It will put into focus whether its actually worth keeping it, or getting rid and possibly buying a better car. No point buying a car for £1000 then spending £2000 trying to sort out all the issues with it, when you could have bought a trouble-free one for £2500.

Get it in to Berts. There is no place better and his prices are very reasonable. Also his diagnostic equipment is between his ears not some fangled plug in crap!

shop around ask forum members wheres best. find a garage you can trust, they are out there. find one with enthusiast mechanics, or buy a haynes or bently and do the work yourself its not difficult. i work in the trade as a auto spark and have been a mechanic, loads of garages i work for would love to work on the older stuff. although you cant plug into a mk1 if you own a car made after 98 having "fangled crap" is an essential. and believe me if garages didnt have them the labour bills would be even bigger
